Umm, I don’t have any tonsils*

I have had a miserable week of sickness. It started last weekend with a fever, body aches and cough. During the week it started to go away but soon returned with a terrible cough. Yesterday at work I could barely talk without coughing, my lungs are angry. This morning I woke up and felt like my chest was on fire and my throat was swollen 10x it’s normal size. So I gave in and called the Dr’s office for an appointment.

I got there and the nurse took my vitals and asked if I’ve been around sick people. I said “all day, I work at an Urgent Care”. So she asked about strep throat, to which I responded “I haven’t had it since I was 3”. So she decided she was going to swab me for it. She sticks the swab in my throat and says “wow, your tonsils are really swollen”. To which I reply “Umm, I don’t have any tonsils”.

She got this “did I really just say that then” look on her face and said “oh, um, well must be the side of your throat is very swollen then”. Needless to say the culture was negative, as I haven’t had strep throat since my tonsils were removed. And my best friend used to get it 4-5 times a year and I never caught it from her, it’s just not something I get.

The NP came in and did her exam and diagnosed me with Bronchitis. She gave me a Z-pack but said that there really wasn’t anything she could give me for the cough since I’m pregnant. I can continue taking the robitussin, even though it’s not working. But nothing stronger :( I really hope the antibiotics kick in and the cough is gone, cause I’m sick of it! She did tell me to ask my OB when I see him this week if there is something he would give me for the cough. As sometimes they will allow some meds or know of some meds that are safe.

*And yes I know tonsils can grow back, but mine were removed when I was 3 and have not grown back.
