Our first broken bone

On Friday our little Mara broke her leg. We aren't exactly sure what happened, but believe she was running down the stairs and maybe jumped off to many steps. She broke it right at the middle joint and has to have surgery because it's displaced. The vet was worried they wouldn't have a screw small enough but believe they have found one that will work.

Her surgery isn't scheduled until Tuesday afternoon, so they sent us home with pain meds. She's not splinted or anything because the vet thought she might move it in the splint and get it stuck in an uncomfortable position, so she won't be casted until after her surgery.

She has actually adapted well to 3 legs and is jumping on/off the couch and bed as normal. She isn't being her rambunctious self, but I think that is due to the pain meds. Last night she was wanting to play with Chewbacca and tried to jump on him a few times, but then I think she realized it hurt to play and stopped. So back to the couch she went. Every once in a while she will whimper in her sleep when she moves her leg, but I think I have gotten her pain under control. I hate seeing my little baby girl in pain. I just hope that she heels quickly after her surgery.

I do find it ironic that she got hit by a truck and didn't break anything yet she's jumping down the stairs, like she's done several times a day, and breaks a leg. The vet did say that the type of break she has is common in small dogs who jump high or far, which she does think she can fly at times so I guess we should be lucky this is the first injury.

I just hope it's the last.

oh, poor baby! I hope all goes well with her surgery! You'll all feel better when she's safely in her new cast!
