You are not a fish

Thursday I had my appointment with the Cardiologist and I know nothing more than I did before the appointment. First I seen the Fellow Cardiologist who came in and did an exam, went over all of my history and told me my Holter results. It did show that my heart skipped a beat, and not only the time I felt it but 1 other time as well. The first time was just 1 beat and I didn't even notice it. But the second time was when I felt it and it jumped really fast for about 5 beats. But since the skipping is because of the 2 upper chambers of my heart it really isn't anything to be to concerned with, now if it had been the lower chambers then that would be a reason for alarm.

Also my resting heart rate is about 82 and it should be closer to 60, even though 60-100 is considered normal. This could be due to the pregnancy as my blood supply is doubled or it could be because of another reason. But we won't know the answer to that until after the baby is born.

After the fellow told me what he thinks we should do from here the Doctor came in. And well, I'll just say he seemed very cocky. He told me I had edema in my legs before even looking at them, told me that I'm drinking to much water, and kept calling my OB a she when he is in fact a he. After telling me a few things he finally looked at my legs and at this point I did have some slight swelling. But I had been sitting on the exam table for over 45 mins with them hanging, so of course they had become a tad swollen. Since then I have checked them several times a day and have no edema what so ever. I even had the nurse at work check them after my 12hr shift and she said I had no edema.

As for the water I told him I drink about 8-10 bottles a day. He looked at me and said "why are you drinking that much, you are not a fish". He told me that to much water can actually raise your blood pressure and put strain on your heart. I then told him I only drink that much when I am at work, on my off days (3-4 a week as I work 12 hrs) I'd be lucky to drink half of that. He kind of just blew that off and said not to drink so much.

He did agree with our next course of action though: an Echo and lab work to check my Thyroid and Iron levels. As thyroid problems and being anemic could cause heart palpitations. Once we rule everything out then the only thing left would be just a symptom of pregnancy. Which is what they are thinking.

So I left there with no answers. I mean I do know that what I am feeling is actually my heart skipping a beat, but I don't know why. And I feel like I wasted an hour of my time when they could have ordered the echo and lab work before my appointment just as they did the Holter monitor. But I guess they make more money the more times I come into their office, that's probably why he was so cocky, he knew he was getting paid for nothing.

Back to waiting...joy.

Visiting from ICLW ...
Any chance you can find a more agreeable cardiologist to take care of you? Sounds like *he's* the reason your blood pressure might rise!
